Special Issue Introduction
This Special Issue will dedicate to recent advances in peripheral nerve surgery. It will include papers on Fusogens, a new method to repair nerves that results in immediate return of function using polyethylene glycol applied to the repair. New techniques to couple the two nerves ends together using a newly invented nerve coupler. This will allow the close approximation of the severed nerve ends and the application of Fusogens. The nerve coupler can also be used to position a set of electrodes to turn off the nerve with a nerve stimulator. Multiple advanced techniques for the treatment of neuromas will be presented and discussed. This issue will also include targeted reinnervation for the control of robotic prostheses. Treatment of compression neuropathies using stem cells to improve recovery and reduce pain will be presented, and release of nerves and its effect on diabetes. There will be a paper that compares the indications of nerve transfers to tendon transfers, and a paper focuses on new nerve grafts from allografts to tissue-engineered nerve grafts. There will also be papers on the future of medical and resident teaching of peripheral nerve disorders and surgery using virtual reality, augmented reality, avatars computers, artificial intelligence and machine learning.
