Special Issue Introduction

Breast reconstruction has made great strides in the last two decades. Autologous reconstruction is more complex than implant-based options and requires a surgeon with specialized training but is often associated with superior long-term patient satisfaction. Though autologous reconstruction is in many ways considered a gold standard reconstruction, its intricacies warrant thorough investigation. Both patient-related and surgeon-related factors play a role in the success of these operations. This Special Issue focuses on providing our readership with up-to-date information on the advantages and limitations of autologous tissue transfer to the breast. The goals are to explore advancements in oncoplastic planning, timing of reconstruction, flap selection, and considerations for optimizing aesthetics at both donor and recipient sites.
