Topic: Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering in Wound Healing

Recent advancements in wound care are increasingly focused on regenerative strategies that support both functional recovery and aesthetic outcomes. In plastic and reconstructive surgery, the integration of biomaterials, tissue engineering, and drug delivery systems has opened new avenues for treating complex wounds. Biomaterials provide scaffolds that offer mechanical support while promoting cellular adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation—critical processes for tissue regeneration. Tissue-engineered skin substitutes, incorporating bioactive components and living cells, present promising alternatives to traditional grafts, particularly for extensive burns, chronic ulcers, and surgical defects. These constructs can replicate native skin architecture and function, accelerating wound closure and reducing scarring. Controlled drug release from engineered matrices further enhances local therapeutic efficacy while minimizing systemic side effects. Clinical applications now extend beyond simple wound coverage to include customized solutions for skin regeneration, scar modulation, and aesthetic restoration. This Special Issue invites original research and reviews that explore the synergy between biomaterials, tissue engineering, and drug delivery in the context of wound healing. Submissions emphasizing translational approaches, clinical outcomes, and innovative skin substitutes or engineered tissues that improve patient care in reconstructive and aesthetic medicine are particularly welcome.
