Special Issue Introduction

Does diabetes run in the family? This is one of the questions frequently asked by patients in our daily clinical practice. Both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes have a strong hereditary component. However, genetic predisposition alone is not solely responsible for the development of diabetes (except in the case of monogenic diabetes). This Special Issue will delve into the burgeoning body of evidence regarding the genetics of diabetes and offer guidance on diabetes screening, particularly for type 1 diabetes. Insulin has been the main treatment option for people with type 1 diabetes since its discovery in 1921. However, recent years have seen the emergence of novel therapies not only for established diabetes but also for the prevention or delay of type 1 diabetes in high-risk individuals. This Special Issue will provide valuable insights into these emerging therapies for type 1 diabetes.

The global prevalence of type 2 diabetes is on a worrisome upswing, posing substantial challenges to healthcare systems and society at large. Type 2 diabetes is a major cause of blindness, renal failure, amputations, and cardiovascular diseases. The approval of novel glucose-lowering therapies with cardioprotective benefits has ushered in a paradigm shift in the management of type 2 diabetes. We anticipate that this Special Issue will also shed light on the groundbreaking therapies for type 2 diabetes and their application to cases of type 2 diabetes associated with obesity
