Special Issue Introduction

The human microbiome, often referred to as the "hidden organ," harbors genetic information exceeding that of the entire human genome by more than 150 times. Predominantly inhabiting the distal gastrointestinal tract, these microbes play a pivotal role in human metabolic health and susceptibility to diseases, as evidenced by current research. Consequently, interventional therapies targeting the gut microbiota have received extensive attention and are undergoing active development. Probiotics, by modulating the composition and functionality of the gut microbiota and producing beneficial metabolites, play a crucial role in restoring its equilibrium. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has demonstrated significant efficacy in treating gastrointestinal infections such as Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), and its potential extends to treating other gut-related diseases, as well as neurological and psychological health issues. In recent years, postbiotics, non-active metabolites produced by probiotics exerting biological effects on the host, have emerged as a new therapeutic approach for disease prevention or treatment. With their notable safety, stability, broad applicability, and independence from antibiotic limitations, postbiotics offer a promising avenue. However, the therapeutic mechanisms underlying gut microbial interventions require further validation, and their full potential remains to be explored. The aim of this Special Issue is to collect the latest advances and evidence on gut microbial therapies in probing human health and disease. Researchers are encouraged to submit research or review articles elucidating the application of these therapies in clinical settings, along with their mechanisms of action, efficacy, and safety profiles.
