Special Issue Introduction

The human microbiome, an intricate collection of microorganisms inhabiting various parts of the human body, plays a pivotal role in shaping health and disease outcomes. Both the gut and skin harbor a complex array of bacteria, fungi, yeast, and archaea, which collectively influence metabolic and inflammatory homeostasis through various mechanisms. This Special Issue aims to delve into the role of gut and skin microbiome, focusing on the gut-skin axis. Through comprehensive exploration, we seek to uncover novel insights into the multifaceted roles of these microbial communities in health and disease.

Topics for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to:
1. Changes in the gut and skin microbiome in association with disease states versus healthy conditions;
2. The association between the gut or skin microbiome and metabolic health;
3. The nexus between the microbiome and aging;
4. The influence of secondary metabolites from the microbiome on inflammation and metabolic disease;
5. The role of nutrition in the gut and skin microbiome;
6. Topical ingredients and how they modulate the skin microbiome.
