Special Issue Introduction

Diet significantly influences the gut microbiome, which in turn plays a pivotal role in health status. Global diet, including consumption of alcohol and dietary xenobiotics, is one of the most important modifiable factors affecting the risk of different types of cancer. Dysbiosis is a common feature in cancer, where the usual microbiota and metabolome are progressively altered as tissue damage progresses. Cancers of a non-genetic origin frequently have a slow development, with tissue lesions that progress slowly. Therefore, advancing the knowledge of how diet and dietary components impact the microbiota, and how microbiome alterations could affect cancer onset, progressions, and responses to medical treatments, is paramount for cancer prevention and optimizing medical treatments.

This Special Issue welcomes submissions of full research articles, reviews, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and perspectives on all aspects of the interactions among diet, microbiome, and various cancer types. A comprehensive comprehension of these relationships holds the potential to aid in all stages of cancer prevention: primary (before cancer development), secondary (detection for early intervention), and tertiary (management to mitigate complications and improve prognosis).

Submissions are particularly encouraged in areas of in vitro and in vivo studies, clinical trials, and the application of artificial intelligence for risk assessment, focusing on the following areas:

1. Diet and microbiome interaction in different types of cancer;

2. Impact of alcohol and dietary xenobiotics on microbiome and cancer;

3. Effects of dietary bioactive compounds on microbiome and cancer ;

4. Influence of diet and/or dietary components on target microorganisms related to cancer;

5. Effect of diet on the gut metabolome in the context of cancer;

6. Diet and/or microbiome in cancer medical treatments;

7. Personalized approaches integrating microbiome and nutrition for cancer management.
