Special Issue Introduction

The complex interaction between the animal microbiome and the host immune system stands as a fundamental determinant in the onset and progression of various diseases. Recent research has increasingly concentrated on unraveling the intricate causal relationship between microbiota composition and the genesis of diseases, placing a significant emphasis on the pivotal role of the host immune environment as a crucial mediator within this dynamic interplay. The modulation of the immune system can act as both a consequence and a catalyst in disease processes, while microbial communities have demonstrated profound impacts on host immunity, thus exerting notable influences on disease outcomes. Central to this complex network is the host immune environment, which serves as the primary conduit connecting microbial communities to the molecular mechanisms that govern disease initiation and progression.

This Special Issue aims to advance our comprehension of microbial biomarkers for immune microenvironments in various diseases, with a specific focus on elucidating their functions in disease intervention and prognosis. We invite submissions of full-text research articles, perspectives, reviews, meta-analyses, or systematic reviews encompassing a diverse array of topics, including but not limited to:
● Explorations into microbiome-host interactions and their ramifications on immune modulation;
● Investigations into the mechanisms through which the animal microbiome influences the host immune system;
● Identification of microbial biomarkers indicative of host immune microenvironments across various diseases;
● Examination of microbial biomarkers pertaining to host immune responses in diseases and their underlying mechanisms;
● Analysis of alterations in the host immune microenvironment induced by the animal microbiome across different organ systems;
● Utilization of microbial biomarkers for disease intervention and prognostication;
● Pioneering endeavors in developing novel methodologies for investigating the interaction between the animal microbiota and the immune system;
● Inquiries into the interplay between commensal and pathogenic microorganisms.

We warmly welcome contributions that shed light on the intricate interrelationships between microbial communities and the host immune system, with the overarching objective of enhancing our capacity to diagnose, treat, and prevent a wide spectrum of animal diseases.
