Special Issue Introduction

This special issue will delve into the intricate interplay between microbial agents and the development of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the pivotal role that various microbes play in the etiology and progression of IBD. This special issue aims to bring together cutting-edge research and insights into the mechanisms through which microbial factors contribute to the pathogenesis of these complex gastrointestinal disorders.

The special issue covers several key subtopics:

1. Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis and IBD: Investigate changes in gut microbiota composition in IBD patients, examining how these changes trigger inflammation;

2. Microbial Modulation of Immune Responses: Explore interactions between gut microbes and the immune system, focusing on how microorganisms influence IBD-related immune responses;

3. Pathogenic Microbes: Study specific microorganisms like adherent-invasive Escherichia coli (AIEC) and their roles in disrupting gut homeostasis and causing IBD;

4. Mucosal Barrier Integrity and Microbes: Examine how gut microbes affect the intestinal barrier's integrity and its link to inflammation;

5. Microbial Metabolites and IBD: Investigate microbial metabolites like short-chain fatty acids and their impact on IBD and potential therapeutic uses;
6. Diet and host-microbial interactions and their regulation of inflammation in IBD.

Keywords

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), gastrointestinal disorders, gut microbiota dysbiosis, immune responses, pathogenic microbes, mucosal barrier integrity, microbial metabolites
