Special Topic Introduction

Advanced MEMS/NEMS sensors and chip-based technologies are spearheading a profound paradigm shift in modern sensing, propelling the field towards ultra-low power consumption, miniaturization, high-density arrays, and multifunctional integration. Integrating advanced micro/nanomaterials with underlying semiconductor architectures lays a disruptive foundation for on-site and in-situ detection in complex environments. Driven by advanced micro/nanofabrication processes, conventional benchtop analytical instruments are rapidly evolving into miniaturized, portable, and even flexible “Lab-on-a-Chip” platforms. This transition enables highly sensitive, real-time quantification of trace biochemical molecules directly in real-world settings. As fundamental materials science converges with cutting-edge semiconductor technologies, MEMS/NEMS devices are transcending laboratory boundaries to empower a myriad of frontier applications. From multimodal tactile and olfactory perception in embodied AI and next-generation non-invasive wearables to advanced portable scientific instruments and unmanned systems, these technologies are poised to fundamentally reshape the future sensing ecosystem.

 

To capture the tremendous vitality and broad prospects of this interdisciplinary field, Micro Nano Science proudly organizes this Special Issue. This collection brings together breakthrough contributions from leading global scholars, highlighting the pivotal role of MEMS/NEMS technologies as the core engine driving the revolution in on-site and in-situ detection. Featuring forward-looking original research and authoritative comprehensive reviews, this issue will explore the boundless potential of micro/nano-chips and sensing technologies to tackle complex detection challenges and expand the frontiers of human perception.

 

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Next-generation MEMS/NEMS sensing architectures, high-performance biochemical and gas sensors, emerging functional sensing materials and novel transduction mechanisms, Lab-on-a-Chip platforms, chip-based analytical instrumentation, and innovative methodologies for on-site and in-situ detection.
