Topic: Application of Characterization Techniques in Solid-state Batteries

Ever-growing demands for energy density and safety in energy storage devices are promoting the development of next-generation battery technologies, among which the all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) show the greatest promise due to their high energy density and excellent safety. However, several critical challenges hinder their implementation, including the electro-chemo-mechanical instability at the interface between metallic lithium and solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), the fracture of SSEs due to the growth of dendritic lithium, and the microstructural degradations of composite cathodes during battery cycling. In this Special Issue, we emphasize the importance of studying the spatial distribution and temporal evolution of the microstructural characteristics in SSEs at the microscale, such as element redistribution and segregation, strain accumulation, defect formation, etc. By revealing the compositional and structural evolutions in ASSLBs with various advanced imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopy characterization techniques based on neutron, synchrotron radiation, and electron microscopes, we can gain new insights to resolve the challenges bottlenecking the stable cycling of ASSLBs, eventually facilitating their practical application.
