Special Topic Introduction
The Special Issue “Advances in Environmental Exposure Monitoring and Assessment of Emerging Contaminants” aims to highlight recent advances in field-deployable technologies for detecting emerging contaminants and their applications in environmental exposure monitoring and assessment. Contributions on chemical sensors and biosensors employing different transduction mechanisms, including optical, electrochemical, acoustic, and piezoelectric techniques, will be considered, with emphasis on their applicability to on-site monitoring of contaminants in relevant environmental media. Particular attention will be given to whole-cell biosensors based on genetically modified microorganisms and innovative bioassays that can support exposure screening and characterization. Studies demonstrating how these technologies can improve the assessment of contaminant occurrence, exposure levels, temporal or spatial exposure patterns, and potential exposure pathways for humans or wildlife are especially encouraged. The Special Issue welcomes methodological developments and original applications that establish a clear link between contaminant detection and exposure assessment, rather than studies focusing solely on analytical performance without an explicit exposure-related application.
