Special Topic Introduction

Tire-derived chemicals (TDCs) released from tire abrasion, aging and leaching have emerged as a widespread class of priority contaminants. Tire wear particles (TWPs), from micro- to nanoscale, serve as both pollutants and carriers for chemicals, such as p-phenylenediamines (PPDs) and their quinone derivatives, benzothiazoles (BTHs), diphenylguanidine (DPG), and hexamethoxymethylmelamine (HMMM), continuously entering aquatic, soil and atmospheric media. These pollutants exhibit complex multimedia occurrence, migration and transformation, posing persistent exposure risks to aquatic/terrestrial biota and humans via multiple pathways. This special issue welcomes original research and critical reviews on occurrence characteristics, environmental fate mechanisms, exposure routes, ecotoxicological effects and human health hazards of diverse TDCs and TWPs. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

(i) multimedia occurrence, transport, and transformation of TDCs across air, soil, water, and other environmental compartments;

(ii) external and internal exposure assessment via environmental monitoring, human biomonitoring, and food web transfer;

(iii) toxicological outcomes and mixture effects relevant to biota and human health;

(iv) exposure and pharmacokinetic modeling (e.g., PBPK, scenario analysis).

 

We particularly encourage interdisciplinary studies integrating field monitoring, laboratory experiments, computational modeling, and epidemiological approaches. This special issue aims to strengthen systematic understanding of tire pollution and provide scientific support for ecological risk prevention and public health protection.
