Special Topic Introduction

Increasing the energy density of rechargeable batteries requires coordinated advances in electrode materials, electrolyte chemistry, and interfacial stability. High-capacity electrodes and multielectron redox reactions offer substantial opportunities, but their practical application remains limited by parasitic reactions, sluggish kinetics, unstable intermediates, and degradation under demanding operating conditions. These challenges call for an integrated understanding of materials chemistry and cell performance.

This Special Issue invites submissions of original research articles, reviews, and perspectives on advanced high-energy batteries, including lithium-based, aqueous, solid-state, and emerging conversion systems. Topics of interest include metal anodes, high-capacity cathodes, halogen and chalcogen redox chemistry, polymer and hybrid electrolytes, solvation regulation, and electrode–electrolyte interfaces. Contributions on aqueous and redox-flow batteries are particularly welcome when they demonstrate strategies for improving energy density, reversibility, or performance under practical operating conditions.

We also welcome operando characterization and theoretical studies that clarify reaction pathways and degradation mechanisms, together with cell-level demonstrations addressing active-material loading, electrolyte consumption, metal utilization, temperature tolerance, and safety. By linking mechanistic insights with practical validation, this collection aims to identify transferable design principles for batteries that combine high energy density with durable and reliable operation.
