Special Topic Introduction

Emerging contaminants have attracted increasing global attention due to their widespread occurrence, complex environmental behavior, and potential risks to ecosystems and human health. These contaminants, including pharmaceuticals and personal care products, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, microplastics, nanomaterials, and novel industrial compounds, are continuously released into the environment through wastewater discharge, agricultural activities, and industrial processes. Their persistence, transformation, and bioavailability in environmental media pose significant challenges to pollution control, environmental monitoring, and risk management.

Understanding the environmental behavior of emerging contaminants, including their transport, fate, transformation, and interactions with biotic and abiotic components, is essential for accurately characterizing exposure pathways and assessing ecological and human health impacts. This Special Issue welcomes original research articles, reviews, and short communications that integrate environmental chemistry, toxicology, ecology, and health-related studies. Contributions addressing innovative analytical methods, multi-omics approaches, toxicity mechanisms, and risk assessment frameworks are particularly encouraged. By bridging environmental processes with biological responses, this Special Issue seeks to improve our understanding of the impacts of emerging contaminants and to support the development of effective mitigation and management strategies for protecting environmental and public health.
