Special Issue Introduction

Emerging contaminants (ECs), including micro(nano)plastics (MNPs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), tire wear particles (TWPs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), have attracted increasing attention due to their persistent, potential toxicity, and widespread occurrence in the environment. These contaminants can enter various environmental matrices and undergo processes, such as migration, transformation, degradation, and distribution, potentially causing adverse effects on environmental biota. Additionally, ECs may pose risks to human health through pathways such as bioaccumulation in the food chain. Despite growing concern, research on the environmental fate, toxicological risks, and mitigation strategies for ECs remains limited, underscoring the urgent need for further studies. This Special Issue seeks to compile cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews that advance our understanding of the behavior, ecological impacts, and management of ECs.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

● Environmental occurrence, transport, and transformation of ECs;

● Ecotoxicological effects of ECS on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems;

● Bioaccumulation, trophic transfer, and long-term ecological risks of ECs;

● Advanced analytical methods for the detection and quantification of ECs;

● Innovative remediation technologies (e.g., biodegradation, advanced oxidation, adsorption);

● Policy, regulation, and risk assessment frameworks for ECs.

We invite submissions of original research articles, reviews, and short communications that contribute to advancing knowledge in this critical field. All manuscripts will undergo rigorous peer review to ensure high quality and relevance.
