Special Issue Introduction

Bridges and transportation infrastructure systems often act as the backbone of modern communities. These critical infrastructures are known to be susceptible to various natural and other technological hazards throughout their service life (e.g., earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, blasts, etc.). The fragility and risk of bridges and transportation infrastructure systems against these individual and combined hazards are of significant concern for both practitioners and policy-makers. To solve this issue, it is critical to identify potential vulnerabilities, assess risks, quantify resilience, and develop effective measures for mitigating and recovering from various types or combinations of hazards. This Special Issue welcomes articles on the latest theoretical research and cutting-edge technological developments, including advanced physical analysis, machine learning, and statistic modeling techniques, to improve the assessment and management of risk and resilience of bridges and transportation infrastructure systems.

Areas covered in this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

● Advanced fragility modeling;

● Advanced construction materials and/or techniques towards resilience and sustainability;

● Artificial intelligence-aided risk and resilience assessment;

● Methodologies for functionality-loss estimation;

● Methodologies for post-hazard recovery planning and decision-making;

● Applied frameworks for rapid resilience quantification;

● Resilience assessment and management at regional (network) levels;

● Life-cycle risk and resilience evaluation;

● Multi-hazard risk and resilience assessment.

Keywords

Bridges, transportation infrastructure systems, vulnerabilities, assess risks, quantify resilience
