Special Issue Introduction

Extreme hydroclimate events (such as floods and droughts) have been causing tremendous losses of life and properties. Therefore, it is critical to advance the understanding of changes in extremes, their physical mechanisms, as well as their impacts. This would help mitigate and manage the impact of extreme events. This Special Issue aims to collect papers related to the development of scientific understanding of hydroclimate events and extremes, including theoretical and methodological advancements in discerning both historic and future extreme hydroclimate events, related impacts, as well as mitigation and adaptation strategies. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
(1) Detection and attribution of long-term changes in extremes;
(2) Past and future changes in hydroclimate events and extremes on global, regional and local scales;
(3) Dynamics, mechanisms, and evolutions of extreme hydroclimate events;
(4) Developing new methodology (such as machine learning) to quantify future changes in extreme events and reduce associated uncertainty;
(5) Risk analysis of extreme hydroclimate events and mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Extremes, detection and attribution, mechanisms, uncertainty, risk analysis, mitigation and adaptation
