Special Topic Introduction
Ammonia is essential to fertilizer production and is increasingly recognized as a promising energy carrier. However, conventional ammonia synthesis is energy-intensive and associated with substantial carbon emissions, highlighting the need for more efficient and sustainable alternatives. Developing innovative synthesis strategies and understanding the mechanisms governing nitrogen activation and ammonia formation are therefore important scientific challenges.
Recent advances in catalysis, electrochemical synthesis, and plasma chemistry have opened new opportunities for sustainable ammonia production. Progress in catalyst design, active-site engineering, reaction-interface regulation, and theoretical modeling is providing new insights into nitrogen activation, reaction pathways, and catalytic performance.
This Special Topic aims to highlight emerging strategies and mechanistic advances in sustainable ammonia synthesis. Topics of interest include novel catalytic systems, electrocatalytic and plasma-assisted ammonia synthesis, nitrogen activation, reaction mechanism investigations, catalyst design, and theoretical modeling. Contributions that connect fundamental mechanistic understanding with improved synthesis efficiency, selectivity, and energy utilization are particularly welcome. This collection seeks to advance the understanding of ammonia formation and promote innovative approaches toward efficient and sustainable ammonia production.
