Special Issue Introduction
Car companies are under increasing pressure to produce cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles that also excel in safety, security, comfort, handling, and drivability. Meeting these broad and ambitious requirements is a challenging task, necessitating significant technological advances. To meet these demands, innovation within the auto industry is accelerating, and connectivity, automation, and electrification are increasingly being leveraged in ways that will transform the next generation of transportation systems. However, realizing this transformation hinges on overcoming complex vehicle control design and automation problems.
This Special Issue invites original applied or theoretical contributions, as well as comprehensive tutorial and survey articles, involving advanced, elegant control design and automation methods (model-based, optimization-based, learning-based, or hybrid approaches) for challenging automotive applications, including, but not limited to, vehicle automation and driver assistance systems, powertrain control, energy management systems, battery management systems, thermal and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control, active suspension, chassis control, resilient and secure control, platooning, multi-vehicle coordination, and other complex vehicle control challenges.
