Special Issue Introduction

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis are prevalent and debilitating neurological disorders. Recent studies have revealed the significance of metabolic changes in neurons and glia in the pathogenesis of these diseases. For example, abnormal glucose metabolism, iron metabolism and lipid metabolism contribute to neuronal damage in AD and PD. However, the relationship between metabolic dysfunction and neurodegenerative diseases is complex and multifaceted. Further research is imperative to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and develop effective therapeutic interventions targeting metabolic pathways in neurodegenerative diseases.

In this Research Topic, we aim to compile Original Research and Reviews to provide deeper insights into the cellular and molecular mechanisms of metabolic dysfunction in neurodegenerative disorders and therapeutic strategies targeting metabolic pathways for the treatment of these conditions.
