How the List Assesses Research Impact
The list is compiled by a research team led by Professor John P. A. Ioannidis of Stanford University. Using citation data from Elsevier’s Scopus database, the team applies standardized scientometric indicators to assess researchers' citation impact.
The list provides two categories of data: Career-long Impact and Single-year Impact. The former reflects researchers’ cumulative citation impact across their careers, while the latter focuses on a single year. In the 2026 release, the single-year data cover citations received in 2025. The indicators include citation counts, the h-index, and measures adjusted for co-authorship.
Because the list relies on citation metrics, its results should be considered alongside differences among research fields, researchers’ career stages, and scholarly contributions that citation measures may not capture.
