Extracellular Vesicle Research and Future Health Forum and EVCNA Board Meeting Conclude Successfully

From June 12 to 13, 2026, the Forum on Frontiers in Extracellular Vesicle Research and Future Health and the Editorial Board Meeting of Extracellular Vesicles and Circulating Nucleic Acids (EVCNA) were successfully held at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China. The event was jointly organized by the Puyuan Institute for Future Technologies of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and EVCNA.

This forum focused on frontier areas in extracellular vesicle research, including basic biology, technological innovation, clinical translation, and future health applications. It brought together more than 100 experts, scholars, researchers, and industry representatives to discuss the latest advances and future trends in the field of extracellular vesicles. The conference featured 35 high-level academic presentations, including one academician lecture, five plenary presentations, 28 sub-forum presentations, and one roundtable discussion. The presentations covered the entire spectrum from fundamental mechanistic research to clinical translational applications, fully demonstrating the field's cutting-edge vitality and trend toward interdisciplinary integration in the field of extracellular vesicles.

Opening Ceremony

In June, amid the height of summer, leading academic minds gathered on the banks of the Huangpu River. The conference opening ceremony was hosted by Professor Weiliang Xia, Conference Chair, Vice Dean of the Puyuan Institute for Future Technologies at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and Executive Editor-in-Chief of EVCNA.

Editor-in-Chief Yoke Peng Loh extended a warm welcome to all distinguished guests attending the conference and expressed sincere gratitude to colleagues across sectors for their longstanding support for academic exchange and innovation in the field of extracellular vesicles.

The speakers expressed the hope that, taking this forum as an important opportunity, they would further promote international academic collaboration and the translation of research findings, and jointly advance extracellular vesicle research to new heights.

Subsequently, Mr. Min Fan provided a comprehensive overview of the company's decade-long development. He reviewed the achievements OAE has made since its establishment in 2015 in journal development, academic platform building, and the development of a global academic ecosystem, and shared the company's development philosophy of serving China's research community and advancing international academic communication.

Plenary Lectures and presentations

The plenary lecture session was co-chaired by Professor Yong Cheng, Professor Shenglin Huang, and Professor Zhangfeng Zhong. The session comprised six presentations, during which distinguished guests engaged in in-depth discussions on a range of cutting-edge topics: EVCNA and translational medicine, gene therapy for Alzheimer's disease, extracellular vesicles and the regulation of organismal homeostasis, the development and clinical translation of microalgae-derived exosomes, quality evaluation of stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles, and immunomodulatory strategies in extracellular vesicle-based therapies. The session comprehensively showcased the latest advances in extracellular vesicle research, spanning basic research to clinical translation, and provided an important academic platform for advancing related technological innovation and industrial development.

"Extracellular Vesicles and Circulating Nucleic Acids and Translational Medicine"

As Honorary Editor-in-Chief of EVCNA, Academician Fan introduced the journal's development history and key milestones, and highly commended its academic quality, publishing philosophy, and future development direction. He has long been dedicated to frontier research in nucleic acid chemistry, bioanalysis, molecular diagnostics, and nanobiotechnology. Fan has also been deeply involved in the development and operation of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's major national science and technology infrastructure for translational medicine, and has made important contributions to advancing translational medicine.

Parallel Sessions

The conference featured four parallel sessions, focusing on cutting-edge directions including the characteristics, mechanisms of action, and health effects of extracellular vesicles; the engineering and application of extracellular vesicles; the development and utilization of extracellular vesicles from different sources; and innovations in research technologies and tools for extracellular vesicles. Participating experts engaged in in-depth exchanges on the latest research findings and key technological breakthroughs in the field, collectively showcasing the latest advances in basic research, technological innovation, and clinical translation of extracellular vesicles. These sessions provided an important platform for promoting interdisciplinary collaborative innovation, advancing high-quality development in the extracellular vesicle field, and facilitating industrial translation.

Professor Peiyong Jiang of The Chinese University of Hong Kong delivered a presentation titled "Advances and Clinical Applications of Liquid Biopsy."

Professor Lianghai Hu of Jilin University delivered a presentation titled "High-Throughput Isolation and Multi-Omics Analysis of Tumor-Derived Extracellular Vesicle Subtypes."

Associate Professor Mei Lu of Beijing Institute of Technology delivered a presentation titled "Engineered Exosomes and RNA Delivery."

Roundtable Forum

The forum also featured a dedicated roundtable discussion chaired by Professor Weiliang Xia, Vice Dean of the Puyuan Institute for Future Technologies at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Centered on the theme "Cell Derivatives: Policy Evolution, Clinical Translation, and Future Trends," the session brought together four experts—Professor Qingling Fu of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Xunbin Wei of the Peking University Advanced Institute of Clinical Medicine, Professor Min Zhou of Zhejiang University, and Professor Tao Na of the National Institutes for Food and Drug Control—for an in-depth dialogue on policy development, clinical translation, and future directions in the field.

Experts shared in-depth insights from the perspectives of policy, clinical practice, and industry on the development of exosomes, microvesicles, and other cell-derived products, particularly regarding regulatory science, clinical translation, and industrialization. The on-site discussions were lively and featured an active exchange of views. Participants agreed that the field is now at a critical stage in its transition from basic research to clinical application, and that policy guidance, standards development, and coordinated industry–academia–research collaboration are urgently needed to advance its development.

Exchanges and Discussions

With the diverse support from three partners, the conference further broadened the scope of academic exchange. A poster display area was also set up to showcase innovative achievements and frontier advances. During the tea breaks, representatives from universities, research institutions, and enterprises engaged in open, multi-level networking and held in-depth discussions on technological development and potential cooperation opportunities. These interactions effectively helped align needs and communication channels among industry, academia, and research, providing strong momentum for deeper collaboration in the future.

EVCNA Editorial Board Meeting

During the forum, the EVCNA Editorial Board held a meeting. Professor Weiliang Xia, Executive Editor-in-Chief for the China Region, joined all Editorial Board members and Young Editorial Board members in reviewing the journal's significant progress in publication output, impact metrics, and international collaboration. They also held in-depth discussions on the journal's next-stage development strategy, building strong consensus for further elevating the journal.

The successful convening of this forum further promoted interdisciplinary integration and high-quality development in extracellular vesicle research and future health, injecting new momentum into the development of an open, collaborative, and innovative academic ecosystem. EVCNA will continue to work closely with colleagues across sectors to build a world-class international platform for academic exchange and to support comprehensive breakthroughs in the extracellular vesicle field, from fundamental research to clinical translation.
