Special Issue Introduction

Host microbiome research has entered an exciting phase of translational discovery and near-to-market application of microbiome diagnostics and therapeutics. Microbiome-based diagnostics using state-of-the-art machining learning approaches tested on big data are showing promising signs and improved accuracies in predicting health and diseased microbiomes. Studies in in vitro and in vivo models have identified single microbes, consortia of microbes, and entire ecosystem restoration with fecal microbiome transplants to be of clinical relevance. The global microbiome diagnostics and therapeutics industry has seen a rise in the number of microbiome-oriented start-ups and pharma companies actively involved in research that can lead to products in the market in the coming years. This special issue aims to highlight some of the latest cutting-edge research and discoveries in the field of human and animal microbiomes, with special emphasis on diagnostics and therapeutics. Researchers are invited to submit research or review articles related to:
1. Microbiome alterations in health and diseases, especially well-designed case-control studies;
2. Development and application of microbiome-directed or microbiome-based therapeutics, e.g., dietary fibers and next-generation probiotics or associated molecules;
3. Application of existing or development of new models/methods (ML) to predict disease or treatment outcomes in large populations studies;
4. In vitro and/or in vivo models for testing microbiome and host, microbiome-medication-interactions;
5. Tools that advance open user-friendly microbiome big data analytics and biomarker discovery;
