Special Interview with Dr. Yolanda Picó
On November 25, the Editorial Office of Water Emerging Contaminants & Nanoplatics (WECN) was honored to have a Special Interview with Editorial Board member Dr. Yolanda Picó, an excellent expert from the Environmental and Food Safety Research Group (SAMA-UV), the Desertification Research Centre (CIDE), University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain.
Dr. Yolanda Picó has more than 30 years of experience in the fields of Environmental and Food Chemistry, developing analytical methods which contribute significantly to the improvement of the environment and determining the impact of climate change and human development in the presence of traditional and emerging contaminants. Based on Dr. Picó’s research in water pollution and detection and identification of emerging pollutants, we asked the following six questions during the interview:
1. What are the research trends and challenges in your field(s) of expertise? What projects are you currently working on?
2. Wetland is one of the important natural ecosystems. It is of great significance for protecting biodiversity. What inspired you to choose to study the occurrence of emerging pollutants in wetlands? What do you think is the practical significance of this study?
3. Wetland resources have shown great value in natural ecology, production, social life, and other aspects. For example, it provides abundant freshwater resources for our production and life, and contains very rich animal and plant resources. Could you talk about the current status and challenges of wetland conservation?
4. The hydrological process of wetlands is the key factor in maintaining ecosystem function. It determines the plant and animal habitat and is the key to ecological restoration engineering. What do you think is the key to wetland ecological restoration?
5. A large number of emerging pollutants are discharged into the natural environment with sewage, which poses a potential threat to aquatic life and water quality safety. What are the main analysis and detection methods of new pollutants at the present stage?
6. The detection and identification of emerging pollutants are of great significance to environmental monitoring, and it is also a very interesting work. Could you share with us something interesting about your research?

Dr. Picó's biography
Yolanda Picó is a Full Professor of Nutrition and Food Chemistry and Researcher at the Desertification Research Centre (CIDE) at the University of Valencia. She is the coordinator of the Food Safety and Environmental Research Group (SAMA-UV). Her scientific trajectory accumulates more than 30 years of experience in the fields of Environmental and Food Chemistry.
Along her career, she has published more than 300 articles included in SCI and more than 20 book chapters, and is the editor of 5 international books, some of which have been translated into multiple languages, and has published several Special Issues in prestigious international journals. All these activities have been financed with autonomous, national, and intentional projects that she has led as a responsible researcher, including a Prometheus project of the Generalitat Valenciana. She has participated as an expert in national and international advisory committees [e.g., Panel of Plant Protection Products and their Residues of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA, 2009-2012), Advisory Board of the Water Join Programme Initiative (Water JPI, 2019-) and of Catalan Institute of Water Research (ICRA, 2019-)]. She was also an evaluator in the 5th, 6th, and 7th Framework Programmes and in the Horizon 2020 of the European Union.
