Energy solutions are the driving force behind the continuous progress and development of human civilization.
When Prometheus stole the spark for humanity, the greatest transformation on this planet began. Fire, the first energy source mastered by humans, not only dispelled darkness and cold, but also ignited the dawn of civilization. From drilling wood for fire to controllable nuclear fusion, the energy revolution has always been the driving force behind the leaps of human civilization. Today, we stand at the critical point of a new energy revolution, and the journal, Energy Z, has emerged to document this great transformation that concerns the survival of humanity.
The energy revolution is never simply a technological iteration, but a reshaping of the form of civilization. The roar of steam engines in the 18th century gave birth to industrial civilization, the popularization of electricity in the 19th century illuminated modern life, and the large-scale extraction of oil in the 20th century made globalization possible. Every change in the energy system is accompanied by profound changes in social structure, economic models, and even human thinking patterns. Nowadays, facing the dual crisis of climate change and resource depletion, the development of new energy technologies has shifted from a “progressive option” to a “necessity for survival”. The breakthroughs in photovoltaic cell conversion efficiency, the commercial application of solid-state batteries, the development of new energy storage systems, and the experimental progress of controllable nuclear fusion, these technological milestones are weaving the safety net of human civilization.
The essence of energy technological progress is the readjustment of the relationship between humans and nature. When we cultivate photosynthetic microorganisms to produce clean fuels in the laboratory, build giant solar power arrays in the desert, and mine combustible ice resources in the deep sea, we are actually reconstructing the way humans obtain energy. This kind of reconstruction not only requires breakthroughs in hard technologies such as materials science and quantum computing, but also requires the collaborative evolution of soft environments such as energy policies, market mechanisms, and consumer attitudes. When technological innovation resonates with social innovation, the energy revolution can take root.
The energy issue is essentially the ultimate proposition of human survival rights. According to the United Nations’ data, nearly 800 million people worldwide still lack access to stable power supply, and excessive reliance on fossil fuels poses a threat of climate disaster to the entire human race. This dual dilemma warns us that the future energy must balance fairness and sustainability. Whether it is the micro smart grid in rural Africa or the hydrogen energy infrastructure being built in developed countries, they are all interpreting a truth - the success of an energy solution lies not only in breakthroughs in technologies, but also in whether all people can access affordable and sustainable energy benefits.
Energy Z will uphold the belief of documenting every technological breakthrough, contemplating every policy choice, and focusing on every fairness gap. Because we deeply understand that energy is not only the driving force behind the rotation of turbines, but also an indispensable factor in the development of artificial intelligence and space exploration, and the lifeblood of civilization. In this era of uncertainty, let us jointly search for the key to open the door to the future - it may be hidden in the equations of quantum mechanics or found in ancient wisdom, but it will surely shine with the light of human reason. This light, akin to the spark of Prometheus, will illuminate our path forward.
Energy Z provides an online platform for sharing cutting-edge research, methodologies, frontier mini-reviews, and unique perspectives on energy breakthroughs, fostering partnerships between academia and industry to address the challenges of global future energy.
The journal will be published bimonthly with additional Special Issues focusing on specific frontier topics. We have assembled an eminent group of international researchers with expertise across various energies to serve on the Editorial Board. For manuscripts submitted to Energy Z, scientific excellence and originality will be the criteria for external review and acceptance. We also aim to provide fast processing times for articles submitted for publication. The first issue of Energy Z is scheduled to be launched in October 2025, and we would like to invite you to submit papers for future issues (https://www.oaepublish.com/energyz).
