It gives me great pleasure to present the 2016 Annual Work Report of Neuroimmunology and Neuroinflammation (NN). On January 10, 2017, as Managing Editor, I presented an overall review of the development of the journal over the past year to all members of the Editorial Office. A summary of the key events of what has a very busy year read followed.

Under the leadership of our Editors-in-Chief Professor Gang Zhao, Professor Athanassios P. Kyritsis and Professor Thomas Müller, NN has achieved fruitful results thanks to the joint efforts of all the members of the Editorial Board, Editors, external reviewers and our readers.

In 2016, a total of 56 articles were published, including five articles on the Special Issue “Autoimmune Neurological Diseases Associated with Autoantibodies Specific for Synaptic Antigens” organized by our Associate Editor, Dr. Raffaele Iorio. There are another two articles on the ongoing Special Issue of the “Infectious Diseases of the Central Nervous System” organized by our Editor-in-Chief Professor Gang Zhao. (We plan to publish 10 articles in a Special Issue, and the remaining eight articles are in the process of being peer-reviewed or written.)

The manuscript types are as shown in the following figure:

The authors of the articles published in 2016 came from no fewer than 17 countries around the world, as the following figure shows:

Compared with 2015, the process of peer review is more stringent and scientific and the quality of articles has also been greatly improved. Articles published in 2016 were cumulatively browsed 69,858 times (data collected from March 1 to December 31, 2016). The contribution by Dr. Carmen D. Rietdijk et al. entitled “Neuronal toll-like receptors and neuro-immunity in Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and stroke” was viewed 5,554 times. The contribution by Dr. Zhu-Yi Li, one of our Editorial Board members, entitled “China guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of myasthenia gravis” was browsed 4,845 times. Additionally, articles published in 2016 were cumulatively downloaded 4,965 times (data collected from March 1 to December 31, 2016), a figure which includes one of the articles contributed by Dr. Maurits van den Noort et al., which was downloaded 328 times. Articles of such high quality also attracted a large number of neurological experts to actively cite them. The figures for 2016 alone show that 56 published articles were cumulatively cited 44 times (data collected from March 1 to December 31, 2016). Moreover, since the launching of the journal in June 2014, the number of citations of published articles has increased year by year, as shown below:

In 2016, Neuroimmunology and Neuroinflammation actively collaborated with 12 major international academic conferences in the field of neuroimmunology and neuroinflammation, such as the New Zealand Applied Neurosciences Conference 2016 (NZANC 2016) and the 10th International Conference On Frontotemporal Dementias 2016 (FTD 2016). At the same time, led by Editor-in-Chief Gang Zhao, the journal also participated in two major domestic neurology conferences, namely, the 9th Conference on Chinese Neurology and the 19th National Conference on Neurology. During these conferences, our Editors actively sought the valuable advice of experts and listened carefully to their views about the development of journals and other issues connected with continuous improvement, such as optimizing the site and improving service levels for the majority of scholars to provide an open platform and the ultimate in service.

In addition, NN has been indexed by the following 16 databases: CAS, EBSCO, Eurasian Scientific Journal Index, Google Scholar, Hinari, JournalGuide, JournalTOCs, Root Indexing, CNKI, Wanfang Data, DRJI, Open J-Gate, SHERPA/RoMEO, Bielefeld Academic Search Engine (BASE), and ResearchBib. Through cooperation with conferences, inclusion in databases and joint promotion with OAE Publishing Inc., the global influence of the journal is constantly expanding and it is becoming well known among experts and other readers. Up to December 2016, the readership of the journal was distributed over 140 countries around the world, as the following figure shows:

The editorial team would like to take this opportunity to thank the Editor-in-Chief, Editorial Board members, reviewers, readers, and authors of the journal for their hard work and continuing support over the past year. In 2016, the journal made some gratifying achievements, but there is still a long way to go to reach our ultimate objective. In 2017, under the leadership of our Editors-in-Chief Professor Gang Zhao, Professor Athanassios P. Kyritsis and Professor Thomas Müller, the Editorial Board members, reviewers and the editorial staff will cooperate still more closely with each other to continue to uphold the rigorous scientific quality and fairness in publication of the journal, in order to create a high-quality journal with a global influence and improve on the achievements of 2016.

Respectfully submitted by Rui-Rui Zhang, Managing Editor.
