Topic: Frontiers Research in Diagnosis and Treatment of Acute Myocardial Infarction

Special Issue Introduction
Primary percutaneous coronary intervention with stent implantation (pPCI) has become the standard of care treatment of acute myocardial infarction when performed in a timely fashion by expert operators in a pPCI center. Despite the appropriate implementation of the treatment, a small but clinically relevant fraction of patients may present an ominous outcome during follow-up leading to heart failure decompensation, re-hospitalization, or even death. In this regard, cardiogenic shock secondary to acute myocardial infarction occurs in approximately 8% of the cases, but the mortality rate in this cohort may be as high as 50% despite current therapies. New research is currently in progress in order to improve the prognosis of patients suffering from ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. In this issue, we will review potential areas of research both during the diagnosis and the therapeutic phase beyond stent implantation.
