Special Issue Introduction

The speedy aggrandizement in wireless communication technologies, concurrent with immediate measure requisites to improve road safety, has expedited considerable development in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). ITS came into existence with a strong perspective to provide end-to-end, better, worthier, safer, more efficient, and much more improved transport services for both on-road and off-road scenarios. Intelligent communication technologies, such as trip guiding smartphone applications (that direct you how much to walk before you take the next bus or train, where to get down, etc.) and the latest safety-oriented vehicle systems (such as Anti-Lock Braking systems, air bags, Navigation systems, etc.), are all part of the ITS. With increasing congestion leading to increased accidents, the government authorities and automobile manufacturers have realized the need to develop new sophisticated schemes for in-vehicular capabilities. Consequently, this has resulted in the formation of Vehicular communication networks termed ‘Vehicular Ad hoc Networks’ (VANETs). VANETs are, therefore, an emerging promising technology of the ITS due to their potential benefits for travel planning, notifying road hazards, cautioning emergency scenarios and alleviating congestion, provisioning parking facilities, and addressing environmental predicaments. Hence, security is the foremost necessity in VANETs.

This Special Issue addresses all aspects related to cybersecurity measures in ITS and associated fields. Specifically, it covers the following topics:
● Authentication schemes in ITS;
● Security issues in designing real-time protocols;
● Privacy-preserving algorithms;
● Trust issues in ITS;
● VANETs security;
● Machine Learning and its applications in ITS;
● End-to-end security in ITS;
● Blockchain and smart contract uses in ITS;
● Key distribution algorithms;
● Real-time applications.
