Special Issue Introduction

Despite scientific advancements in cancer therapy and the introduction of numerous effective new medications, thoracic and breast cancers remain the most prevalent and fatal forms of the disease.

Among these, malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), which affects the pleura surrounding the lungs, presents a clinical challenge: it exhibits resistance to current therapeutic strategies, resulting in a bleak prognosis, with a median survival of only 9-17 months after diagnosis. Furthermore, its high heterogeneity at the molecular level poses a substantial barrier to the development of effective therapies.

Breast cancer ranks as the second most common cancer in women, carrying a 13% risk  of development. It can be classified into various subtypes, each with different implications for prognosis, providing in-depth insights into the tumor's biological properties. The integration of novel molecular diagnostic tools plays a crucial role in accurate classification, allowing for improved prediction, prognosis, and clinical management.

Ongoing efforts are dedicated to optimizing therapies for thoracic and breast cancer. A comprehensive knowledge of molecular alterations and tumor heterogeneity is essential to advance the development of "precision medicine" strategies and facilitate the identification of both diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers. Early diagnosis, in particular, could make a significant difference in the patient's prognosis.

Therefore, the primary objective of this Special Issue is to present the latest research findings that delve into the molecular mechanisms underlying the onset, progression, and metastasis of thoracic malignancies and breast cancer. Additionally, it seeks to highlight the development of novel therapeutic strategies that can optimize treatment approaches, enhance prognosis, and broaden our understanding of the biology of these diseases. Emphasis  will also be placed on early detection and precise molecular classification.

We cordially invite you to contribute to this Special Issue by submitting original research articles, brief reports, and review articles, all of which will play a pivotal role in the advancement of knowledge in these critical fields.
