Special Issue Introduction

In an era of rapid technological advancement, Autonomous Driving and Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (AD-IVHS) stand at the forefront of innovation, reshaping the transportation landscape. As we witness the convergence of cutting-edge technologies, from artificial intelligence (e.g., Large Language Models (LLM), ChatGPT, and Transformers) and sensor networks to connectivity and robotics, now is the opportune time for a comprehensive exploration of their integration into the realm of autonomous vehicles and intelligent highway systems.

This Special Issue aims to bring together researchers, academics, and industry experts to contribute their latest findings and insights into the multifaceted aspects of AD-IVHS. We invite original research articles, review papers, and case studies that delve into the challenges, opportunities, and breakthroughs in this transformative field. Researchers are encouraged to submit high-quality contributions, providing a platform for the dissemination of state-of-the-art research that will propel the development and deployment of autonomous driving and intelligent transportation systems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
● Intelligent decision-making, planning, and control for autonomous driving;
● Sensing and perception algorithms and systems;
● Dynamic environment understanding;
● Test and evaluation of algorithms, approaches, and frameworks;
● Human-autonomy interactions;
● V2X systems;
● Connected automated vehicles;
● Social interactions for autonomous driving;
● Driver behavior and human factors;
● Application of LLM for AD-IVHS;
● Intelligent communication (V2I and V2V);
● Safety of the intended function and functional safety.
