Special Issue Introduction

Bridges are vulnerable to catastrophic events such as earthquakes, hurricanes, fires, and explosions, which can significantly affect their safety performance and reduce functionality throughout their lifespan. Resilience design aims to develop bridges that can withstand and recover from a wide range of disruptive events, ensuring their functionality, safety, and long-term sustainability. Resilience assessment provides valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of a bridge, providing guidance for decision-making, resource allocation, and planning efforts to improve resilience. It helps stakeholders understand the potential impacts of disruptive events and develop strategies to minimize risks, enhance reliability, and ensure the long-term safe operations of bridges. Overall, the study of resilience design and assessment methods for bridges under multiple disasters is essential for creating structures that can withstand and quickly recover from a wide range of challenges, ensuring public safety, economic stability, and sustainable development.

The aim of this Special Issue (SI) is to collect and present the latest research development in the field of resilience design and assessment methods, especially for bridges under multiple disasters. The topic includes but is not limited to a combination strategy of multiple disasters, simulation of deterioration and recovery processes, assessment method of safety performance, and resilience index.
